Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
