The English along with Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and Wales will face off in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the showpiece match, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would remain separated from both England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the winner of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
