Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
