The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing highlights that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the period, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
