Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot showcasing angels, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Considering 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that maintaining everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the initial installments of the new season serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might seem unsuited, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are perfectly fit for the combat party.

Why They Must Go

First, the team has a clear idea where to proceed after a intense first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the campaign’s events—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his obligations and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Secondly, each member has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires vengeance.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous location.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could help the party access areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander turned against House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to journey toward the northern region in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can look forward to learning which adventurers will be where in the story’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
